Karen Mogensen Reserve
Although technically launched at the end of 2020, it was in 2021 that the successful completion of the first expansion campaign for Karen Mogensen Reserve was fulfilled. The piece of property purchased for conservation and the expansion of the reserve will help protect more animals and will be providing an opportunity for reforestation of the parts that were cattle grazing lands. The success of this campaign has inspired The Reserve to seek out other adjacent pieces and continue to expand by another third.
Futuro Verde Holistic Pre-K through 12 IB certified School
Futuro Verde was proud to officially incorporate the arts, theater, music, and dance into the school curriculum while simultaneously continuing to infuse permaculture concepts, activations, and workshops. These new inclusions have been added to maximize the benefits of all subjects taught to the students for a more holistic education.
Wild Sun Rescue
In 2021, Wild Sun Rescue Center released 14 more Scarlet Macaws into the wild. This has brought the total release number up to 24 since the Scarlet Macaw Reintroduction program inception. In 2021, out of all the animals rescued or brought to the center, 57 completely recovered and were released back to the wild. In 2021, Wild Sun was able to build 6 more enclosures, a permitter fence to accommodate the requirement for the registration of upcoming animal sanctuary permits, and the hiring of new animal care management staff. The animal care management team increased to 4 senior managers (all biologists with advanced degrees), 2 junior managers, and, for the first time, a full-time on-site veterinarian.
Green Wave Edutainment Programs
The new media projects of both Farm Talk Friday and Permaculture Pinup have continued with great success. Both were created in 2020 as education entertainment projects. The goal was to make information and updates fun to help drive traffic to our website (instead of paying for advertising). Both project followings grew in 2021 with hundreds of followers for each. In combination, both projects have increased our weekly visits to the Green Wave site and raised local awareness. For the first time, our local branding, of where our main operating office is, has increased enough whereby individuals have reached out via the website to ask for environmental issue advice.
